Professor Tolly Epstein the lead researcher at the Ohio University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, points out that specific advice about pets cannot be given to parents due to complications of the study. Numerous studies suggest that children living with dogs have a low risk in getting eczema. 636 children were involved in a study of risk of allergy in regards to exposure to environment. All children were from parents with a history of eczema, nasal allergies and asthma. The study involved researchers collecting dust from the children’s homes, skin-prick test taken to determine if their immune systems were producing antibodies due to exposure to pet dander.

Reports showed that out of the children, at 4 years 14 percent who were allergic to dogs and lived with a dog developed eczema. 57 percent of these children did not live with a dog from infancy. Out of 184 children only 9 percent of children living with dogs got eczema. The report on cats was different. It was found out that clarity was not found in relation to children living with cats. However it was different with children who were allergic to cats. Study showed that out of 13 children living with a cat at an early age 54 percent already had eczema by age 4 as compared to 33 percent who did not live with cats. However, the rate of eczema went down to 11 percent of children who were not allergic to cats but living with them. Prof Epstein noted that this study was especially made for research on development of eczema and the result applied only to children whose parents have a history with allergies.
